FLUID FLAG

I created the fluid flag in 2021. It is composed of two horizontal stripes (aquamarine and orange) with a wave-like form in the middle. The movement or fluidity of colour between the aquamarine and orange bars represents a fluidity or change in dimensions of self over time such as (but not limited to) sexual orientation, romantic orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression.

I define fluid as people with dimensions of self that continually change over time. These dimensions may include (but are not limited to) sexual orientation, romantic orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression. For example, someone may change romantic orientation one day, then gender identity the next, or change both romantic orientation and gender identity at the same time. Fluid can be a destination or a transitory space.

origins

I arrived at the term fluid through personal experience. I see the term as a starting point. It brings positivity to continual change, to permanent limbo, to fuzzy borders. It can be a journey, but also a destination. It does not belong to me, or anyone else. It belongs to the community and no doubt will evolve over time. If it’s you in part or whole, feel free to use and/or extend it.

The fluid flag was first raised in Tauranga, New Zealand, in 2021 as part of the exhibition Mānawatia Takatāpui/Defending Plurality at Tauranga Art Gallery.

USE

COLOURS

The colours for the fluid flag are as follows:

Upper half: R 82, G 255, B 222, or #52FFDE

Lower half: R 255, G 109, B 0, or #FF6D00

Curved shape: a smooth gradient between the two colours above.
